How does your company handle different types of Leave?

I'm checking in.. with friends to see what variations of Leave their company offers.

Unfortunately, it's triggered by a family members' illness that will culminate in a few days.

I remember a job that didn't have a clear policy about leave. Because it was a small company it seemed to adjust Leave Policy on the fly.

I'm specifically referring to Sick Leave, Bereavement Leave, and Military Duty Leave.
How does your company address it? Are you allowed to use Sick Leave for all family members- even extended? How many days are you issued?
The District of Columbia just passed a resolution requiring all businesses with more than 100 employees- must provide Sick Leave. Very interesting.

Bereavement Leave. Do people really misuse this? It's unfortunate if the misuse has led to the burden of proof that someone in your family .. has, in fact, moved to the next stage. Some companies enforce a strict 3 day bereavement, then any additional time needed has to come from vacation time, personal time or sometimes, Leave Without Pay. Honestly, who thinks of these things? I really needed a month when my mother passed. I certainly was not functioning in three days. I am grateful that the company I worked for at the time told me to take a week...longer if I needed it. They were very kind. I can't think of anyone I know who could really be functional at work after losing a loved one, in just three days. Of course, everyone is different and extended family may present a different approach.

Military Duty Leave.

I don't know much about Military Duty Leave. I thought that if a person on Reserve was called up, the company had to hold a slot for them. And, since I am not well-versed in this arena. I'll research it further before posting any additional comments on it.

I'll post a survey on the blog because I'd like to get a sense of what Leave policy is out there.
